What is Podiatry?

Podiatry, formerly called Chiropody, is a term used to describe the branch of medicine which undertakes the examination, assessment, diagnosis and the treatment of the foot, ankle and lower limb.

Podiatry, a universal term, is associated with cutting edge research and is a scientific degree.

Feet are normally "Just those things at the end of your legs".  They do what they were designed to do and are not given much thought - that is until something goes wrong!

There are numerous conditions where a Podiatrist is qualified to treat both internally and externally to the foot and ankle.  I provide a thoroughly comprehensive service for treating numerous conditions.

An overview of conditions that can be treated are:

·     Skin conditions

·     Removal of corns

·     Removal of callus

·     Child (Paediatric) foot care

·     Treatment of verrucas

·     Ingrowing toe nail surgery

·     Assessment and treatment of the diabetic foot

·     Wound care

·     Problems related to osteoarthritis and other arthritic diseases

·     Hammer or mallet toes

·     Bunions

·     Sports injuries

·     Supportive padding and strapping

·     Trapped nerve - plantar digital neuroma

·     Foot pain

I also specialise in the prescription of bespoke orthotic devices.  These are supportive devices that sit in your shoes and help reduce abnormal stresses and improve function from the feet upwards.  Below are some examples of complications that can be effectively treated with orthotic devices:

·     Shin splints

·     Painful feet during movement

·     Flat feet

·     Musculoskeletal complications

·     Post foot surgical advice and treatment

·     Sports injuries

·     Rheumatoid arthritis

·     Paediatric patients

·     Diabetes

Orthotic devices enable you to improve your walking and running ability by aligning not only the foot and spine, but also by enhancing the transfer of energy through the body.  This enables you to use your body effectively and efficiently saving undue stresses and preventing the unnecessary overuse of joints and minimising injuries.

Technological advancements and innovative podiatric practice have assisted in the improvement in footwear.  I can also advise on all types of footwear to meet your requirements.

As a Podiatrist, I can offer additional information and advice on all aspects of foot-related treatments.   Essentially, I provide a thoroughly comprehensive service for treating numerous conditions.
